- Panda sex isn’t very successful
Pandas are very picky when it comes to choosing a mate. This works fine in the wild, where populations are greater and the choice wider. But in captivity with a very limited amount of partners to choose from, such as at the Chengdu Panda Base, most pandas quickly turn celibate. Coupled with this, the males aren’t well endowed – in fact they’re the one of the least well endowed species in the animal kingdom! This makes them quite unsuccessful baby makers, and artificial insemination is responsible for most of the pandas born in captivity.
